ATLANTA- The Southeastern Liturgical Music Symposium will be held August 19-20, 2011 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Atlanta. It will focus on the opportunities and challenges presented to liturgical musicians as implementation of the new translation of the Roman Missal begins this Advent. This year's symposium will offer two new features – a concert of sacred music held on Friday evening, and a roundtable discussion featuring all of the presenters. "This is an exciting time for Catholic liturgical music! We will soon implement the new translation of the Mass which will not only recapture the richness of the Mass but make clearer some biblical allusions. It is an opportunity to explore the new possibilities in Catholic music" commented Father Theodore Book, Atlanta's Director of the Office of Divine Worship and Pastor of St. Peter's in LaGrange, GA. The Atlanta Archdiocesan Festival Choir will perform at the opening concert, entitled Rejoice in the Lamb: Sacred Music of England, featuring Benjamin Britten's delightful "Rejoice in the Lamb" as well as works by Dunstable, Byrd, Tallis, MacMillan, Howells and Rutter. The keynote address will be given by Fr. Douglas Martis, director of the Liturgical Institute and chair of the Worship Department at Mundelein Seminary of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Breakout sessions will include presentations by nationally renowned presenters, including Scott Turkington, founder and conductor of the Stamford Schola Gregoriana, Fr. Mike Joncas, Ken Canedo, and Alan Hommerding. Fr. Joncas is the author of three books and over one hundred and eighty articles. He has composed and arranged over 300 pieces of liturgical music. Ken Candedo is a liturgical composer who will share ideas for a youth liturgy retreat that utilizes new and revise Mass settings plus contemporary Eucharistic songs. Alan Hommeriding is the general editor of AIM:Liturgy Resources, the WorshipWorks series and the WLP Organ Library. He will offer many practical examples for the roles of choir and organ in the Mass.
