Back to Seminarians

Scott Couch

Background

I grew up in Carrollton, Georgia at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. My family is very large because my grandma had 9 kids. My immediate family is just five members; my dad (Thomas Couch), my mom (April Couch), my sister (Savannah Couch), and my brother (Steven Couch).

Hobbies and Interests

I love to play pickleball, play a card game called Lorcana, listen to classical and jazz music, and eat at a Waffle House.

Favorite Scripture

Matthew 9:36 “When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.” This is one of my favorite passages because it just shows the heart of Christ and his compassion for us.

Favorite Saint

St. Thomas More is my favorite saint because of the boldness he lived his Catholic life and how he chose his faith over his country. Also, how he cleverly brought truth into a corrupted kingdom was very fascinating.

Vocation Story

My story starts when I was in my junior year of high school, after my brother graduated from high school the thought to discern the priesthood came into my mind and I began to have experiences that drew in my heart through compassion for others. I had lots of opportunities to attend to people’s lives and be a comforter in place of Christ. This just drew me into wanting a life of service to others, even if that means to sacrifice my life in the big and small.

Seminary Experience

I haven’t been here at the seminary for too long just yet, however it is wonderful and has helped me to grow as a more well formed human person. It has been great getting to know all these new people who are all trying to do what I’m pursuing. Also, the prayer schedule is very good and structural.

What I am looking forward to when I become a Priest.

Bringing the sacraments to people is the thing I’m looking forward to. There’s nothing more important than bringing mercy and reconciliation to others. Reconciliation and mercy were the two things that brought me back to the reality of my faith and I now wish to be able to share that mercy with others.

Advice for other Discerning the Priesthood.

Trust in the lord and don’t be impatient with him. It’s his priesthood and he only wants good for us, so just trust in him at all times. Also, if there are any movements in your heart to serve then continue to do good and see where the Lord is calling you
